Snapshot is a weekly feature giving an insight into the different people working within the Media & Communications industry. TNR photographer Matt Crossick tells us about how diverse his job is and explains why the royal baby was his most prominent story of the year…
In a sentence describe your typical day…
The best thing about being a photographer is that there is no typical day! I could be out photographing a PR stunt at sunrise; covering a cabinet meeting at downing street, or have a free day before shooting a premiere in Leicester square or a concert in the evening. The hours vary, what you cover varies, where you are working varies – which is great because you can never get bored!
For you, what is the most prominent story of the year so far and why?
The biggest media event I have covered this year is the birth of the royal baby. It may not have been the most hard-hitting news story, but for photographers working in London the amount of coverage and international interest in the birth meant that we all spent a lot of time planning where we would be, making sure we got a good spot – and of course, waiting and waiting for the big shot. As a photographer you don’t really get to judge whether a story deserves the mass coverage it gets or not – we all knew the papers would go HUGE on the story, so I had to make sure I had shots to send out to them.
At work I am most likely to…
Be inappropriately dressed for the weather. I always seem to have shorts on when it’s raining, and a vest and parka on in the dazzling sunshine…
On the TV you like to watch…
I have to confess I don’t really watch TV. Lots of evenings out at work mean I never really get into anything. Plus a long week photographing Towie members everyday means they’re the last thing I want to see when I’ve got a night off!
The photograph that has impressed you the most recently is…
Andrew McConnell’s photo essay on survers in Gaza, on display at the Press Photographer’s Year exhibition on the South Bank.
On the radio you like to listen to…
The News Quiz on radio 4.
